The Google Shopper Marketing Agency Council

In April 2013, The Google Shopper Marketing Agency Council released some insightful figures about how consumers are using their mobile devices to shop. These figures are a great way to prepare your business for mobile shoppers this upcoming holiday season.

The Google Shopper Marketing Agency Council is a group of recognized shopper marketing experts. This group, in collaboration with Google, seeks to ignite digital thought leadership among Shopper Marketers. The council is focused on driving digital shopper thought leadership, cultivating insightful research, and developing “transformational” toolkit solutions for marketers.

How can you use these figures?

BestBuzz has highlighted some of the key takeaways from the report to show you how to prepare for the holiday shopping season. We are offering a FREE mobile marketing assessment of your business to see if it is “Mobile Shopping” ready!

The most important figure to note is that 79% of smartphone owners are smartphone ‘shoppers’. The council further broke this down as:

  • 62% Standard smartphone shoppers, defined as: Using a smartphone to assist with shopping at least once a month or more.
  • 17% Frequent smartphone shoppers, defined as: Using a mobile to assist in shopping at least once a week.

These people say: “I use my mobile to make everyday tasks easier.” “I use my mobile to research products.” and “I routinely look for new mobile apps.”

The Key take away’s from the study reveal that:

Smartphones are transforming the in-store shopping experience with 8 in 10 smartphone shoppers using mobile in-store to help with shopping.

Shoppers who use mobile more, spend more in-store.

Frequent mobile shoppers spend 25% more in-store than people who only occasionally use a mobile phone to help with shopping.

These are your key customers, how do you reward them for interacting with you on mobile? How do you reach their friends and influence them to get the same deals? How about if every time they are in your store researching your products, their friends learn about the offer too? This possibility really starts to become important when you consider:

  • 44% of smartphone shoppers use their phone find promos and offers
  • 19% use their smartphone to make a purchase
  • 84% of smartphone shoppers use their devices to help shop while in a store

While “Self-help” is becoming the new norm, use this activity to drive the time honored tradition of word of mouth reach.
